The Pretzel

Set up: Lay a soft sheet on the floor near a window with soft, directional daylight coming from one side. Sit so the light skims across your back while the far side falls into gentle shadow — that soft-light-to-shadow gradient is the whole mood. Overcast or filtered light keeps it tender rather than harsh.

The pose is your coverage (plus one pro secret): wear a pair of soft shorts or lingerie bottoms — once your knees are up and hugged close, they disappear completely behind your legs, and you'll feel far more relaxed knowing they're there. Every professional shooting this pose suggests the same thing. This shape covers you completely on its own — knees drawn up to your chest, shins hugged in, both arms wrapped around your legs. The pose alone does all the work, so before anything else you'll set the fold and check it on a test frame (below); you settle in only once the screen shows exactly what you want.

Camera & the test-shot ritual: Phone on tripod facing you, portrait orientation, roughly seated height or a touch above, 2–3 m back. Self-timer 10s or a remote. Here's the ritual that matters most for this one: set your pose, run the timer, and check the screen before you commit to a real take. Zoom in on the frame and confirm the fold sits exactly the way you want — knees, arms, the turn of your body. Adjust, then take another test. Only when the test frame looks exactly right do you shoot for real. You see precisely what's in frame every single time before it counts.

Pose (the wrap, step by step):

  1. Sit down on the sheet and turn your body three-quarter to the camera — one hip a little closer to the lens than the other.
  2. Draw both knees up toward your chest.
  3. Hug your shins in close, ankles together or lightly crossed, heels drawn in toward you.
  4. Wrap both arms around the front of your legs — hands clasped or forearms stacked — and hold your legs snug against your chest.
  5. Let your back round softly and your shoulders come forward over your knees.
  6. Rest your chin toward one knee, lower your gaze, and let your hair fall softly forward.

Take your test frame right here and check it before you settle in.

Body-type adjustments (this pose reads differently across bodies):

  • Fuller bust: draw your knees a little higher and wrap your arms across the front of your shins rather than low on your thighs, so your forearms and knees sit comfortably in front of your chest; round your upper back gently forward.
  • Softer middle: hug your knees firmly in so your thighs press against your tummy — the drawn-up legs cover the middle completely; keep your spine long from the hips so you sit tall into the curl rather than collapsing into it.
  • Slim/petite: this shape folds compactly on a smaller frame — let your knees drift a touch apart under your wrapped arms and lengthen your neck so the pose doesn't read too tight.
  • Curvy/plus-size: give yourself room — plant your seat evenly, let your knees settle at a comfortable width inside your wrapped arms, and drop the far shoulder to lengthen the line of your back.
  • Everyone: your arms and knees are the coverage, so keep them wrapped and settled the whole time — the test-frame check is how you confirm the fold before every real take.

Privacy & control note: you are in complete control here — the pose covers you entirely, you check every test frame before it counts, and nothing you don't choose is ever in the picture. If a frame doesn't feel right, you simply re-fold and shoot again; you decide exactly what the camera sees, and your photos stay yours.
